A mindful approach

Mindfulness is a study of the mind and behavior from the “inside.” It illuminates how interdependent our mind and our body truly are. Is there any more vital task for an educator than teaching how to think clearly, critically, and compassionately? Imagine doing this in an effective way that reduces anxiety and increases wellbeing. The Mindful Music Method combines years of research in positive psychology, cognitive science about how we learn, and mindfulness principles.

“Vista Music School is redefining the sphere of music education. We look at our students holistically, teaching the technical skills necessary to play proficiently and the mental skills essential to play artistically.” - Raquel Sandler, Founding Teacher

These elements, of facing and using your feelings, even frustrations, and letting the mind and heart incubate an answer, are part of the creative process. Learning to harness these emotions leads to improved resilience, creative thinking, problem solving, and stronger self confidence.

“Mindfulness training improves attention, motivation, and learning in students of all ages.” -Daniel Gilbert, PhD

Founding Teacher - Raquel Sandler

We believe — and see the evidence every day in both our students and teachers — that there is more to learning a musical instrument than just proficiency. Music lessons provide a unique opportunity for students to build self-confidence and self-esteem and to learn to stick with something rewarding even when it gets hard. It’s about engaging that part of ourselves that’s hard to define, but that ultimately defines us. At Vista Music School we place the utmost priority on helping each student find that same refuge in music that we have found ourselves.

“I have been taking piano lessons with Raquel for over 4 years. As an older adult with little piano experience, I appreciate Raquel's patient approach and her good humor. Raquel is highly trained in both piano and voice and I highly recommend her regardless of your age.”
